The Celebration Trigger
Celebrations, parties and festive occasions are tempting triggers to light up a cigarette. Here’s how to re-learn how to celebrate without a cigarette. It will help you when quit day rolls around and you actually quit smoking.
1. Smoking Isn’t The Fun Part
Remind yourself that the reason you have fun at parties is BECAUSE you’re not smoking. If anything, all those cigarettes can make you feel miserable later on.
2. Put It Off
When you feel like having a cigarette, just do the old trick of putting it off for FIVE minutes.
3. Start A Conversation
While you’re out celebrating with friends, make a game of meeting as many people as possible. Strike up conversations, find things you have in common with others, whatever you have to do to avoid that cigarette. Here are some fun conversation starters to get you going.
4. Wait Ten Minutes
Next time the urge comes, put it off for 10 minutes and have the cigarette outside. It’ll help break up that pairing of “partying = smoking.”
5. Keep Your Mouth Busy
Keep your mouth busy by eating healthy snacks (junk food can be a smoking trigger, too). Actually, ANYTHING to keep your mouth busy that isn’t smoking is okay.
