The Arguing Trigger
Fighting with a friend can sometimes be a big trigger to smoking. Here’s how to remain committed to quitting smoking even if a fight happens:
1. Take A Walk
Don’t automatically start smoking as soon as you get into an argument. Try to calm yourself down without a cigarette. Try some deep breathing or take a walk to clear your head. Then have the cigarette.
2. Let It Pass
Make a rule that you can’t have a cigarette until AFTER there’s been some move toward making up. Remember, lots of smokers use cigarettes as a way of dealing with emotions. But try letting the emotions just move through you. Eventually, they’ll pass, just like cravings do. And sometimes for the sake of peace, it’s better to just “agree to disagree.” Instead of going around in circles, you both win.
3. Play A Game
Take out your frustrations on the penguins in this arcade game. Hey, whatever works, right?
