The Friends Trigger
Remaining dedicated to quit smoking while being around friends who smoke — that can be challenging. Here are steps to help you stay committed to stop smoking while hanging out with friends who smoke:
1. Practice Just Watching
So how do you hang out with buddies who are smokers? Well, you don’t have to have a cigarette just because they’re smoking. Get some practice watching other people light up without doing the same. Just wait FIVE minutes after they’re done before you start smoking.
2. Wait A While
Next time wait 10 minutes after everyone else smokes before having a cigarette. Remember, all you’re doing right now is just practicing putting time between this smoking trigger and the cigarette.
3. Be Honest
Be honest with your friends. Let them know you’re trying to do something that’s extremely difficult and ask for their support in your effort to stop smoking.
4. Blame Your Doctor
Rehearse this list of “things to tell your friends" when you’re trying to quit smoking.
5. Keep Your Hands Busy
Don’t know what to do with your hands? Well, try a handshake with your friends like the guys in this video.
