Quitting E-cigarettes

How to Quit E-cigarettes

Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive. It also makes quitting e-cigarettes similar (but not 100% the same) as quitting regular cigarettes or other tobacco products.

While not as much research has been done about how to quit e-cigarettes, tons of research has been done to help adults quit nicotine. Here's what we know works:

  • Being ready to tackle the physical addiction
The first step is understanding your triggers. These are the people, places or events that make you want to vape. Next, you’ll need to make plans to cope with those triggers in ways other than vaping. Being prepared to manage withdrawal symptoms and stressors will make quitting easier than going at it unprepared.

Think of these exercises as the map to climbing a mountain. The map won't get you there on its own, but it sure helps to have in your pocket before you set out.

  • Having support from others
Someone to lean on when times get tough. Someone to ask questions (even in the middle of the night). Someone to celebrate with when you're feeling proud! Someone who gets what you're going through, ups and downs and in-betweens.

Climbing a mountain is less lonely and more fun when you’ve got a buddy or two. Plus, you’re less likely to slip—and if you do, there’s someone there to help you get back up.

  • Using quit medications
Quitting medications can make quitting much more comfortable. And it will increase your chance of success! It will help you feel more in control of your cravings so you can stay focused on the reasons you want to quit in the first place.

You’d bring an oxygen tank on your mountain climb to breathe when the air gets thin. Quitting medications make your quitting journey more manageable so you can enjoy the view and get to the top.
