How to Use Nicotine Lozenges

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you. They can determine an appropriate starting dose and a plan for using it.

Follow these steps to use lozenges:

  • Read the instructions that come in the box.
  • Use 1-2 pieces every 1 to 2 hours as needed. Use at least 8-9 lozenges per day to start.
  • Do not use more than 20 lozenges per day unless approved by your healthcare provider.
  • Place the lozenge in your mouth and let it dissolve slowly, within about 20-30 minutes. Move it from side to side in your mouth.
  • Do not chew or swallow the lozenge.
  • You can take the lozenge out if you get tired of having it in your mouth.
  • Works best if you do not eat or drink 15 minutes before chewing and while you are using the lozenge. Especially avoid acidic liquids like soda and coffee.
  • After 6 to 8 weeks, begin reducing your use in whatever way works best for you. You can lower the dose of lozenges you are using, stop using lozenges in certain places or at certain times, or use lozenges for shorter times.

Other information about nicotine lozenges

  • For cigarette smokers:
    • If you smoke within 30 minutes of waking up, and/or smoke more than 20 cigarettes per day, use the 4mg lozenge or mini lozenge.
    • If your first cigarette of the day is more than 30 minutes after you wake up, or if you smoke less than 20 cigarettes per day, use the 2 mg lozenge or mini lozenge.
  • For smokeless tobacco users:
    • If you use more than 3 tins per week, use the 4 mg lozenge or mini lozenge.
    • If you use 3 tins per week or less, use the 2 mg lozenge or mini lozenge.
