How to Use Nicotine Nasal Spray

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you. They can determine an appropriate starting dose and a plan for using it.

Follow these steps to use the nicotine nasal spray:

  • You may use the spray when necessary to control withdrawal symptoms or cravings. You are usually instructed to use the spray 1 to 2 times an hour, up to 5 times an hour or 40 times a day as needed.
  • Tilt your head back slightly. While holding your breath, spray once into each nostril, directing the spray toward the outer side of your nostril. Breathe out through your mouth.
  • Wait two to three minutes before blowing your nose.
  • The spray may irritate your nose at first, but this should improve with continued use.
  • When used with other tobacco treatment medications: You may use the spray when you have trouble managing withdrawal symptoms or nicotine cravings.
  • When used without other tobacco treatment medications: The recommended starting dose is 1 to 2 doses per hour, with a minimum of 8 doses per day and a maximum of 40 doses per day. In the beginning, many people average 14 to 15 doses per day.
  • Do not use more than 5 doses in one hour.
  • After 6 to 8 weeks, begin reducing your use of the spray in whatever way works best for you or according to the reduction schedule your healthcare provider recommends. For example, you may decide to stop using the spray in certain places or at certain times, or you may want to use it fewer times.
