How to Use Varenicline (Chantix®)
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you. They can determine an appropriate starting dose and a plan for using it.
Follow these steps to use varenicline:
- Read the instructions that come in the box. Take this medication exactly as your healthcare provider instructs. If you have questions, talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
- Start taking varenicline at least one week (7 days) before you plan to stop using tobacco.
- Varenicline comes in two strengths: 0.5 mg (milligrams) and 1 mg. Usually, treatment starts with a 0.5 mg tablet and progresses to a 1 mg tablet. The following is a typical dosing schedule:
- Day 1 to day 3, take a 0.5 mg tablet, once a day
- Day 4 to day 7, take a 0.5 mg tablet, twice a day (one in the morning, one in the evening)
- Day 8 to the end of treatment 1 mg tablet, twice a day (one in the morning, one in the evening)
- Typical treatment continues for 11 weeks using 1 mg tablet twice per day. If you have not quit by the end of 12 weeks, you may continue using varenicline (1 mg tablet twice per day) for another 12 weeks.
- You may stop using varenicline at any time, there is no need to reduce your dose before stopping.
- This dosing schedule may not be right for everyone. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best schedule for you.
- To reduce the chance of nausea, take varenicline with an 8-ounce glass of water after you eat.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed.
- Do not take a double dose of this medication without instructions from your healthcare provider.
