Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you. They can determine an appropriate starting dose and a plan for using it.

Follow these steps to use bupropion:

  • Read the instructions that come in the box. Take this medication exactly as your healthcare provider instructs. If you have questions, talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
  • When you stop using tobacco, some medications may require dose adjustments. Before taking bupropion, tell your healthcare provider the name and dose of every medication and supplement you are taking, especially:
    • Inhaled insulin (Exubera®)
    • Blood thinners
    • Antipsychotics
  • The following are general guidelines for using bupropion:
    • Your doctor or other healthcare provider will help you decide when to start taking bupropion. In general, most people start taking bupropion about 1-2 weeks before their quit date.
    • Most people are started on a lower dose at first to reduce the risk of certain side effects. Usually, the starting dose for bupropion is 150 mg once a day, increasing to twice a day after three or four days. Talk with your healthcare provider about the best dose and schedule for you.
    • Try to take bupropion at the same time each day. Take doses of bupropion at least eight hours apart. Do not take more than two doses in any 24 hour period.
    • If you have difficulty sleeping, take your last dose before 5 p.m., but at least 8 hours after your morning dose.
    • If you miss a dose, wait until the time scheduled to take your next dose of bupropion . Do not take two doses at once.
    • Unless your healthcare provider gives you other instructions, take bupropion with food to lessen the possibility of stomach upset.
    • Swallow tablets whole. Do not crush or chew them.
    • Keep out of reach of children and pets. In case of accidental use or ingestion of bupropion, or in case you take too many bupropion tablets in a 24 hour period, contact a Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) and/or visit an emergency room right away.
    • Most people take bupropion for 12 weeks. Your healthcare provider might prescribe bupropion for longer, if needed.
